Fredericksburg Pride nonprofit is a volunteer based 501(c)3 dedicated to creating a safe environment for our S2LGBTQIA+ community. Established in 2021 - we have YOUTH, BIPOC, and ALL WOMENS programming, partnership events with other LGBTQ+ organizations, nonprofits and allies + , and host the annual FXBG PRIDE fest and March in downtown Fredericksburg. With singlehandedly providing historic events in our area such as the first Pride Flags hung in downtown Fredericksburg's Mainstreets, - we are working hard to achieve our vision where our community is a place where we are all free to express our gender identity and sexual orientation with pride.
There are no hard numbers to quantify the number of GLBT persons in our area however:
- Fredericksburg Pride event served – 6,000 people in 2022
- According to the Williams Institute, 3.5% of the US population identify as gay/lesbian/bisexual, 0.3% identify as transgender. According to fredericksburgva.gov, there are approximately 300,000 people who live within the Fredericksburg district. This does not include the student population at UMW. A 2016 study suggests that 20% of their student population (4300 students) identifies as gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender. Therefore our programming seeks to outreach over 12,000 people. *
*A study in 2016 suggested that as much as 20% of the 4,376 students at the University of Mary Washington (located in Fredericksburg city) respondents identified as gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (https://diversity.umw.edu/prevention/files/2020/10/2016-Student-Climate-Survey.pdf)
With your help, we are able to continue our mission: Forming a safe and welcoming environment for our LGBTQIA+ community.
